What's the right height windshield for me?
When seated in your normal riding position, the top of the windshield should be level with the tip of your nose. When you ride in the rain, you will still have an unobstructed view of the road, and the windshield will still be tall enough to deflect air over and around your head.
I own a 2006 Honda VTX1300, notorious for head buffeting issues. I couldn't find any reviews for the Drop Top on-line, so I took $265 chance. I was replacing a Memphis Fats 21" and the matching lowers before I bought the drop top. I purchased the 15"-17" model, made every adjustment possible to the windshield, the venturi wing, and the lowers, including rake/angle of the windshield, but I couldn't improve the buffeting after 400 miles. It's amazing how the slightest adjustment makes it better or worse. The one thing I did like about the drop top is that I no longer have a piece of plastic at my nose level with the old shield. The drop top does allow a shorter height, but not much of an improvement for my buffeting issue. I've read that its important to get some air flow between your body and the windshield, so I drilled three 3" holes in my beautiful new $265 windshield because if wasn't doing my any good the way it was. Well, the three holes creating enough relief to improve the buffeting enough to where I look forward to riding my bike again. I know the holes kind of defeat the purpose of complete bug protection, but I always ride with a jacket and helmet anyway and the windshield still blocks plenty of wind. By the way, I tried different helmets too, didn't make a difference. Long and short-yes, the drop top is an improvement over the stock Memphis Fats, but be ready to do some modifications to suit your specific needs. I was hoping for a bolt-on, problem gone solution, but the drop top wasn't it for me.
