It’s always special when the RSD Super Hooligans return to Costa Mesa. Before this whole crazy thing took off, they used to hold a four-lap, run-what-ya-brung, dash for cash style race on Speedway night during intermission, with the winner taking all.

According to the RSD peeps, “Roland caught one of the races and was enthralled with the idea of heavy street-legal motorcycle racing and banging bars in such close proximity. All of it seemed so wrong, but looked soooo fun. At the next Harley Night Roland and his friend and fellow NFGer Andy Bell showed up on custom-built RSD show bikes. The final race was an absolute s#!t show; 5 restarts, crashes on every lap and Roland making a valiant last lap inside move to take the win. Roland was hooked, and Super Hooligan was born.”

Fast forward several years and Super Hooligan racing has become a coast-to-coast phenomenon with a national series and big-time backers. And while the motorcycles have evolved into fine-tuned, dirt track weapons, the spirit is still the same, getting together on weekends and bangin’ bars with buddies.

Even though there’s always a sense of homecoming when the Super Hooligan circuit returns to the OC, this year the tension was palpable. Only three points separated series leader Joe Kopp and two-time defending champion Andy DiBrino. With only two races left on the schedule, this year Costa Mesa arrived with big stakes on the line.

Dibrino fired off the first shots. He won all his heats, won the Dunlop Dash for Cash, and got a great start on his lightning-quick KTM Duke 790 in the Main. But savvy veteran Kopp wasn’t going down without a fight and did his damnedest to hold the young upstart off and notch the victory. Tony Alves would grab the final spot on the podium aboard his trusty Harley Sportster 1200.

After scoring the big “V” at Costa Mesa, Kopp posted “With only one round remaining and a tiny points lead in the Championship, things are about to get crazy with @andy_dibrino.”

Dibrino, in return, let it be known that he’s been on the outside looking in before and is ready to give Kopp hell at the Moto Beach Classic.

Champagne showers in Costa Mesa. The big question is, who's going to be popping the championship cork at the Moto Beach Classic? 

“Almost perfect night at Costa Mesa last weekend! Won all my heats and the @ridedunlop Dash for Cash, and finished 2nd in the main event. Joe extended his points lead, but it’s still going to come down to the final race next month at the @motoclassicevents race at Bolsa Chica. Two years ago I came into the last race there 3rd in the championship and ended up winning the thing, so anything can happen with a small points gap between Joe and I for first and second! It’s not over until it’s over.”

Meanwhile, in the J&P Cycles-sponsored Amateur Class, we couldn’t be prouder of Rich Silva who got his first-ever Hooligan victory. Silva goes out every round and races clean and races hard. He’s also got the coolest hashtag #bigmexicanonasmallharley Silva’s been paying his dues for three years now, but this is his first year on a Hooligan Class bike, so we’re glad to see him get a sip of the sweet taste of victory. Congratulations to Carlos Sanchez and Jake Pope for rounding out the Amateur Class podium in 2ndand 3rd place respectively.

Congrats Rich Silva. Enjoy your victory lap, you earned it buddy! 

With only eight points between Kopp and DiBrino heading into the grand finale, anything can happen. Which means you better get you’re a$$ to the 2019 Moto Beach Classic cuz things are gonna get wild. It’s going to be a big bash at Bolsa Chica, from Super Hooligans to surfing to bands like Fishbone and Long Beach Dub Allstars laying down beats. Huntington Beach is definitely going to be the center of SoCal subculture Saturday, October 26. Hope to see you there!
