Along with the demise of the Dyna line in 2017 came the end of the Low Rider S, Harley-Davidson’s club-style cruiser with a performance bend. Rejoice, Low Rider S fans, as Harley is bringing the hard-charging model back for 2020, this time shoveled into the new smooth-handling Softail frame.

The 2020 Harley Low Rider S will be powered by a rigid-mounted Milwaukee-Eight 114 professed to pump out 119 lb-ft of torque at a paltry 3,000 rpm. There’ll be plenty of pop off idle, for sure. Though it’s rigid-mounted to the frame, dual internal counter-balancers will keep your teeth from rattling when 1868cc of power is idling between your legs. Four-valves in each cylinder head sparked by dual plugs will keep the healthy 4.016-inch piston hammering along at a 4.5-inch stroke. The new Low Rider S will inhale via a Gloss Black Ventilator air intake and exhale through 2-into-2 offset shotgun mufflers.

Along with a beefier engine than the Twin Cam 110 the prior platform ran, Harley-Davidson reduced the rake on the new 43mm single-cartridge, inverted fork a couple degrees. The front end of the 2020 Low Rider S is canted at 28 degrees, down from the 30.5-degree rake angle of the 2017 Low Rider S. Scrubbing speed is the duty of dual 4-piston calipers clamping down on twin 300mm floating rotors, and ABS is standard fare. The front end also sees the one-inch motocross-style handlebars up on four-inch straight risers as raised bars is the way to go these days. A small headlight shroud will offer a little buffer from chest-thumping wind at highway speeds. As mentioned, the 2020 Low Rider S rolls in the new Softail frame with an emulsified mono-shock. The coil-over shock features hydraulic pre-load accessed beneath the seat.

“The look of the new Low Rider S is really rooted in the legacy of the Low Rider models of the 1980s, that has a devoted following which has spread world-wide from origins in Southern California, and in the recent Dyna-based Low Rider S model,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Styling & Design, in company PR. “We’ve applied that coastal style and performance-first attitude to the Softail chassis to create a Low Rider S that’s more powerful and agile than ever, with a heavy dose of tough-as-nails attitude.”

The 2020 Harley Low Rider S runs on Michelin Scorcher 31 tires wrapped around a 19-inch Radiate cast aluminum wheel up front and a 16-incher out back. The Radiate wheels are finished in a Matte Dark Bronze to contrast the slew of black finishes on the bike. The powertrain, primary cover and tank console are Wrinkle Black while the derby cover, intake, and lower rocker covers are Gloss Black. The mufflers and exhaust shields meanwhile are Jet Black and the fork, triple-clamp, riser and handlebar, and rear fender supports sport a Matte Black finish. The leather drop seat has a pronounced rise in back to help keep riders in the saddle when they rev it up and drop the 1868cc hammer. The ’20 Low Rider S is offered in two colors, Vivid Black and Barracuda Silver, and has an MSRP of $17,999. Count us among those glad to see the rippin’ Low Rider S back.
