As hot as the adventure-touring market has been it’s surprising that when it comes to a competent small displacement ADV bike, choices were slim. Leave it to off-road leader KTM to fill that void with its 2020 KTM 390 Adventure.

It’s 373cc Single has already proven its mettle in the RC390 and 390 Duke. Twin overhead camshafts, four valves and electronic fuel injection with a 46mm throttle body make for a punchy little engine good for 43 hp and 27 lb-ft. of torque. Add a claimed dry weight of 348 lbs. to the equation and you’ve got a more than capable hill climber.

Looking for a small displacement ADV bike with a legitimate off-road set-up? KTM's got you covered with its 2020 KTM 390 Adventure.

Providing its off-road chops is a 43mm WP Apex fork with a generous 6.7 inches of travel with compression damping in the left tube and rebound in the right. Its WP Apex monoshock has 6.9 inches of travel and can be dialed in for both preload and rebound. The 2020 KTM 390 Adventure has 7.8 inches of ground clearance to help in the rough stuff while Continental TKC 70 tires provide plenty of grip when it’s time to hit the dirt.

Another feature that will help when the road ends is the off-road function of its ABS which reduces the amount of intervention on the front wheel and disengages on the rear entirely. On-road, its Cornering ABS capacity will be useful as it automatically adjusts brake pressure to match the lean angle of the motorcycle. The 2020 KTM 390 Adventure also comes with traction control to minimize rear wheel slippage to go along with a PASC slipper clutch to mitigate rear wheel chatter when you’re on the brakes hard. Riders can configure settings via the menu switch on the handlebar while viewing them on the motorcycle’s 5-inch full-color TFT display.

The KTM 390 Adventure has a lightweight trellis frame similar to the one in the KTM 450 Rally. Its die-cast, open-lattice swingarm is linked directly to the rear shock and has likewise already proven its worth throughout the KTM Adventure range, further evidence that KTM took the 390 Adventure’s off-road abilities seriously.

There’s plenty of KTM aftermarket goodies available to bump up the abilities of the 2020 KTM 390 Adventure a notch, from a Rekluse Radius X Centrifugal Force Clutch Kit to wavy discs to a factory quickshifter. KTM’s little adventurer has an MSRP of $6,199, a little bit more than the $5,795 sticker price of one its primary competitors, the BMW G 310 GS, but that price definitely gets you more power and off-road prowess.
