With a history 32 years strong, the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show is one of the longest-running, most prestigious shows in Sturgis. Rat’s Hole owner Ted Smith sculpts the unique trophies by hand, and the custom ring Frankie Rodriguez of V22LA made for the “Best of Show” winner adds to its exclusivity. While the Rat’s Hole started out in Sturgis as a single contest, it’s now two shows in one, the world famous Chopper Show and the Black Hills Bagger Showdown. This year, approximately 66 motorcycles and trikes in 14 classes battled for the coveted “Best of Show” trophy and ring.

Hand-sculpted by Ted Smith, the Rat's Hole trophies are true originals.

You never know what you’re going to see at the Rat’s Hole Sturgis show, be it a full-blown drag trike with giant twin Avon race tires to Pistol Pete’s “Farm Bike,” a 255 hp sleeper of a drag bike akin to “Farmtruck” from the hit TV show Street Outlaws. While there were just enough Vicla Harleys and scoots like Kickin’ Wing’s cool 1978 FXE chopper mixed into the eclectic mix of motorcycles, big wheeled extreme baggers with turbo-powered engines, ear-splittin’ audio, big money paint jobs, and wheels that cost more than some bikes ruled the show.

Donn Ogilvie of Evil Iron Customs had the perfect paint job for somebody looking to win a bike show in Sturgis. From the Preamble and Bill of Rights scrolled on the front fairing of his custom Street Glide to the 1st and 2nd Amendments inscribed on the stretched tank, Ogilvie won top honors in the 2020 Black Hills Bagger Showdown with his custom 2014 Harley bagger. Having local monuments like Devils Tower and Mount Rushmore streaking down the bike’s left side, the scene complete with fighter jets doing a flyby, definitely didn’t hurt Ogilvie’s chances of winning.

Louie Bailey is taking the Big Daddy Rat trophy and the one-of-a-kind ring home to Grand Prairie, Texas, after claiming “Best of Show” for his custom bagger. From its bodywork to its paint job, the motorcycle’s got excellent flow. It starts with the custom front fender and fairing, then continues in the stretched tank and back panels that blend seamlessly into the stretched bags. It’s the total package, air ride suspension, see-thru covers, dazzling paint, boomin’ audio, the owner of Lucky 7 Custom Cycles Texas out of Dallas/Ft. Worth hoisted the trophy triumphantly over his head as he received a big ovation from the crowd gathered at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads Big Engine Pavilion, making it a clean sweep for extreme baggers at the 2020 Rat’s Hole Sturgis Show.
