American Flat Track racers will soon be strapping on their steel shoes again and getting back to the business of racing as American Flat Track announced its updated 2020 race schedule today. The season will kick off July 17-18 with the Volusia Half-Mile at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida, and conclude October 15-16 in Daytona Beach during Biketoberfest. The new season features a total of 18 races lumped into doubleheader weekends. The farthest west the paddock will travel is Texas as the majority of races are along the Eastern seaboard. A couple of historic staples have been thrown in for good measure as the Lima Half-Mile and Springfield Mile both made the cut. Three of the locations are yet to be announced.

AFT officials have worked hard so that fans can attend races. New protocols have been established based on guidelines set by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal, state, and local mandates.

Here’s a current list of American Flat Track’s 2020 race guidelines and protocols:

  • Reduction in ticket availability to conform with state and local guidelines for      sporting events
  • Reserved seating areas to include buffer zones to provide ample space between fans
  • Fans entering the venue will be provided with complimentary facial coverings
  • Enhanced sanitation and disinfection protocols with frequent cleaning throughout the facility
  • Enhancements to mobile ticketing and elimination of printed tickets
  • Cashless, contactless transactions for concessions and merchandise
  • Regular medical screening of staff and competitors

One of the other major changes is they’re closing public access to the paddock area and there will be no Fan Walk or rider autograph sessions as a result. This intimate interaction between fans and their favorite racers has long set flat track apart from other forms of professional motorcycle racing, so this will undoubtedly be a hard pill to swallow for both fans and riders. The list of guidelines and protocols will continue to evolve as race day approaches, adjusting to any revisions in state and local rules.

NBCSN will continue its delayed broadcast of races on NBC Sports while all 18 races will be live streamed via TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.

In its official press release AFT stated: “Careful consideration has been given to secure a full 18-round race schedule that is logistically possible for riders, teams and staff, while also providing the opportunity for fan attendance. Following a thorough review of state guidelines and consultation with local officials by AFT’s promoter partners, certain events that were originally scheduled for 2020 have been cancelled. All ticketholders for cancelled events are eligible to receive a full refund or a credit for use at future events. Please contact tickets@americanflattrack.com for more information."
