The countdown has begun. About now thousands of bikers across America are checking tires, putting in fresh oil, topping off tanks and loading up their motorcycles to make the annual run to the Black Hills. The 79th anniversary Sturgis Rally kicks off August 2, and for 10 days the sleepy little town in South Dakota becomes the center of the motorcycling universe.

Between installing new parts, accessories and tires, the J&P Cycles Sturgis Retail Center, with its prime location on Lazelle Street, is guaranteed to be hopping. But there’s more reasons to pay us a visit than just shopping. On Monday, August 5th, come on down and meet the Indian Wrecking Crew from 1 to 3 p.m. J&P Cycles sponsors the Indian Racing team in the American Flat Track Twins class and racers Briar and Bronson Bauman (yes, they’re brothers!) will be signing autographs at our Sturgis Retail Center. While you’re there, be sure to check out the big banner we made as a tribute to legendary custom builder Arlen Ness. Arlen has been a friend of J&P Cycles for a long time running and to honor his passing we’ve had a banner made up and are inviting visitors to pay their respects, too, by signing it. We’re also excited that company co-founder Jill Parham is being inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame this year. There’d be no J&P without her hard work, dedication, and guidance, and to have Jill inducted on our 40th anniversary is a tremendous honor. The ceremony will take place at the Lodge in Deadwood August 7 during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Breakfast.

Think what you've got what it takes to make it to the top? The Hooligan Hill Climb we're hosting at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip won't be quite this gnarly (this guy's a pro) but it will definitely be a hoot trying to race up the hill.

The J&P Cycles Countersteer crew is going to be hustling and bustling, too. On Tuesday, August 6, our own Pat Garvin will be helping host the Hooligan Hill Climb at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex. The races will be a head-to-head drag up the slippery slope, so if you think you’ve got what it takes, sign on up and let’s see what ya got. As soon as the hill climbs are done, we’ll be heading over to Camp Zero and joining our friends at Biltwell and Led Sled Customs for the Sportster Showdown. If you didn’t know it, we love the venerable Harley Sportster around here. Seems like we’re not the only ones either because S&S Cycle, Metzeler, Chop Cult, Cycle Source and Lowbrow Customs are also helping sponsor the party. And it’s going to be a party. They’re doing a good old-fashioned hog roast at the Showdown, and a frosty beverage or two will most certainly be swilled. And the fun doesn’t stop there. Go Fast Don’t Die is holding its Anarchy Games out at Camp Zero right after that, so Tuesday is going to be a full day of two-wheel shenanigans.

The next day, we’re planning on being in the thick of more hooligan action as Round 7 of the RSD Super Hooligan National Championship takes place at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. We’re always down for some bar bangin’ and love hooligan racing so much we sponsor the Amateur class. But prizes to race winners aren’t the only thing that’ll be given away that night. So will the two motorcycles we customized for the Buffalo Chip Moto Stampede Giveaway, a Harley-Davidson Street Rod and Indian Scout. The winners will be announced onstage before the Snoop Dogg show. We’re hoping to get boss man Zach Parham up onstage to help hype up the crowd. Who knows, maybe he’ll get a chance to hang with Snoop. One thing's for sure, it’s going to be one wild night.

Celebrities always show up en masse at the Legends Ride to benefit the causes behind the ride.

Be sure to check out Countersteer daily from August 2 – 9 as we bring you reports, photos and videos from the hottest events in Sturgis. Follow us on social, too, because we’ve got some live remotes in the works. We’ll also be joining our buddy Chris Callen for a special broadcast of Cycle Source’s Grease & Gears Garage. While we’ve already posted a 10 Things First-Timers Must Do at the Sturgis Rally and a Top 10 Places to Ride in Sturgis articles, we’ve put together a calendar of concerts, bike shows, rides, races, and special events, too. Choose wisely, have fun, and see you in Sturgis!

The Sturgis Rally website says there's 250 concerts slated for the 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
