Hot on the heels of the release of the new 2020 Scouts, Indian Motorcycle Co. unveiled its full lineup of 2020 tourers and cruisers today. Like power? Then you’ll be happy to hear all of Indian’s big bikes are getting the 1890cc Thunder Stroke 116 engine. Originally introduced in November 2017 as the Thunder Stroke 116 Stage 3 Big Bore Kit, the big V-Twin features a new high-flow cylinder head with a 4.063-inch bore said to flex 126 lb-ft. of torque muscle at only 2,900 rpm. The Thunder Stroke 116 will now power the 2020 Springfield Dark Horse, Chieftain, Chieftain Dark Horse, Chieftain Limited, Chieftain Elite, Roadmaster and Roadmaster Dark Horse.

The newcomer to that list is the 2020 Roadmaster Dark Horse. Indian is giving its top-shelf tourer the Dark Horse treatment, a formula that’s proven successful with other models including the Chieftain and Springfield. Dynamically, the most notable differences between the Roadmaster Dark Horse and the standard version is a bigger 19-inch cast front wheel wrapped in a Dunlop American Elite tire instead of the 16-inch Dunlop Elite 3 on the front of the 2020 Roadmaster. According to the spec sheet, the Roadmaster Dark Horse is 25 pounds lighter, too. Part of these weight savings come from the more streamlined fairing, open front fender, and slammed saddlebags on the ’20 Roadmaster Dark Horse. The new extended-reach Rogue Gunfighter seat complements the edgier Dark Horse disposition, as does the blacked-out treatment on the powertrain, frame and covers. All three paint options for the 2020 Roadmaster Dark Horse are matte, the Thunder Black Smoke version listed at $28,999 while the White Smoke and Ruby Smoke options have an MSRP of $29,749.

Another notable change to Indian’s 2020 lineup comes from the Chief family as the 2020 Chief Dark Horse and 2020 Chief Vintage will now run the same chassis as the Springfield. The Springfield has run primarily the same chassis as Indian’s tourers since day one including the steering head and swingarm, earning it accolades as the best handling Indian cruiser. Now the Chief Dark Horse and Chief Vintage will benefit from both the revised frame with its tighter rake angle and adjustable rear suspension.

Meanwhile, the 2020 Springfield Dark Horse has got a design revamp based on the 2020 Jack Daniel’s Limited Edition Indian Springfield Dark Horse. The changes include 12-inch mini apehanger handlebars, a Rogue seat, blacked-out finishes and Indian’s slammed saddlebags. It also will be running the Thunder Stroke 116 engine with three different engine maps to choose from. The 116 will still feature rear cylinder deactivation while remote locking saddlebags, ABS, cruise control, keyless ignition, and electronic tire pressure monitoring are all part of the package.

Speaking of upgraded packages, the 2020 Chieftain Elite sees Indian’s most powerful audio system to-date. Dubbed PowerBand Audio Plus, speakers are integrated into the fairing and saddlebags. Claimed to create crystal clear sound, the PowerBand Audio Plus is 50% louder than Indian’s standard sound system. The “elite” treatment on the 2020 Chieftain Elite includes a special two-tone paint combo called Thunder Black Vivid Crystal over Wildfire Candy with matching motor highlights and badging, machined Elite wheels, Pinnacle mirrors, select floorboards, and a Flare windshield. And did we mention its stompin’ 1890cc Thunder Stroke 116?

For 2020, Indian updated its Ride Command with Connected Services and improved its customizable ride screens. 

Indian has been keen on dialing in its Ride Command touchscreen infotainment system the last couple years and continues to fine tune it in 2020. This includes the addition of a new quad-core processor and a “Connected Services” package that includes traffic and weather overlays to help find the fastest routes in case of traffic accidents or inclement weather. Indian states that the Ride Command system’s predictive search capabilities and customizable ride screens have also been improved.

Thunder Stroke Stage 2 Performance Kit 

For those who aren’t satisfied with the Thunder Stroke 116’s claimed 126 lb-ft. of torque (you know you’re out there), a Stage 1 Slip-On exhaust is already available in Indian’s P&A catalog. If you opt for the new Stage 1 Oval Slip-On muffler kit and Stage 1 Performance Air Intake, Indian says riders will see an 8% power gain on the Thunder Stroke 116. Pair those to the Thunder Stroke 116 Stage 2 Performance Kit which includes cams, high-flow fuel injectors and throttle body, those gains bump up to 17% more horsepower, the most powerful engine configuration Indian offers.
