Motorcycle Gear FAQ's
What gear is absolutely essential for a new rider?Everybody's tolerance for risk is different, and we don't judge. After talking about motorcycle gear with thousands of riders from all disciplines, there are four pieces of gear that stand out as essentials for most riders: a
full-face DOT-approved helmet, a real
motorcycle jacket (textile or leather), full-finger
motorcycle gloves, and over-the-ankle
riding boots. These protect the most vulnerable parts of your body from both road rash and heavy impacts.
What's the difference between a $150 helmet and a $700 helmet? They all pass the same DOT safety test! The extra money for a premium helmet goes into comfort, quiet, and features. A $700 helmet will be much lighter, have better aerodynamics (so your head doesn't get buffeted by wind), flow a lot more air, and be significantly quieter on the highway.
What is "ATGATT"?ATGATT stands for "All The Gear, All The Time." It's a rider's philosophy that means you wear your helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, and boots for every single ride, no matter how short. Most riders fall somewhere between "All the Gear" and "No Gear."
Are motorcycle riding jeans really safe?Yes! Modern
riding jeans are fantastic. They look just like regular denim, but they are lined with abrasion-resistant materials like Kevlar or Dyneema and have pockets for CE-rated armor in the hips and knees. They offer a ton of protection without making you look like a power ranger.
Leather vs. Textile: Which jacket is better? It depends on your riding. Leather offers the absolute best abrasion resistance, making it the top choice for performance and cruiser riders. Textile (or "mesh") jackets are much better for commuting or touring, as they are often waterproof, have more pockets, and offer way better airflow in the heat.
