Motorcycle Tire FAQ's

When should I replace my motorcycle tires?
When your back end starts to feel a little loose in corners that you’ve blasted through a hundred times before, it’s time to check your tread depth. Use the built-in tread wear indicators. When the tire is worn down to the indicators that are set at 1/32nd inch (0.8 millimeters) or when the tread groove depth is even less, it’s time to change. Also replace any tire with cracks, dry rot, cuts, bulges or a flat-spotted, squared-off profile. Age matters too: most manufacturers say to inspect tires closely after five years and replace them by about ten, regardless of tread.

How do I check the age of a motorcycle tire?
Find the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits are the week and year it was made. A tire marked “2321” was made in the 23rd week of 2021. “New” tires that sat in a warehouse for years aren’t really new.
How long do motorcycle tires last?
Anywhere from about 3,000 to 15,000 miles, depending on the compound, how heavy the bike is and how you ride. Soft sport rubber wears fast, and hard-compound touring tires can go a long way. Rear tires almost always wear faster than fronts, and heavy baggers with a passenger go through them quicker still.
What tire pressure should I run on my motorcycle?
Use the pressure in your owner’s manual or on the tire info label on the bike, not the max pressure printed on the sidewall. Adjust for passengers and luggage per the manual. Check pressure when the bike and tires are cold, before you ride, at least once a week. Low pressure kills handling and wears tires faster.
How do I break in new motorcycle tires?
Take it easy for the first 100 miles or so. New tires have a slick surface from manufacturing that needs to scuff off before they grip well. Skip hard braking, aggressive throttle and deep lean angles until they’ve worn in, and give them a few heat cycles.
Can I mix tire brands or models front and rear?
Best not to. Front and rear tires from the same model are designed to work together on profile, grip and handling. Mixing brands can make the bike feel strange in corners or the wet. Unless your manufacturer approves the combo, stick with a matched set.
Can I put a wider rear tire on my bike?
Sometimes, but it’s not as simple as ordering a bigger size. A wider tire needs clearance at the swingarm, belt or chain, and fender. Big jumps usually need a wide-tire kit, a different wheel or offset drive parts. Check your clearances first, or call our techs before you’re on the side of the road with a rubbing belt.
